Inclusive changeroom & washroom access

City recreation facilities are for all Calgarians. We provide safe access that respects the diversity of our customers.

Customers have the right to access washrooms and change rooms which correspond with their gender identity and/or gender expression.

Mermaid fins

Mermaid fins use is at the discretion of the lifeguard.

Mermaid fin use must be approved by the lifeguard on duty first. Lifeguards must ensure that the mermaid fin user is a strong swimmer. The user must pass the following safety tests prior to use:

  • Swim 25 meters continuously
  • Tread water for two minutes
  • Swim with confidence while wearing the mermaid fin.

The lifeguard will consider how much activity there is in the pool. The user may be tested for competence and expertise with mermaid fins. The lifeguard can refuse the use of any equipment at any time.

Non-Traditional Bathing Wear Policy

The City is committed to providing a safe welcoming environment. We want people from all ethnic and religious backgrounds to feel comfortable in and around the water. Our facility has adopted a non-traditional bathing wear policy as outlined below.

In addition to conventional swim wear, participants may wear:

  • Long-sleeved pants and shirts, tee-shirts and shorts with undergarments or a swim suit worn underneath.
  • Traditional ethnic clothing (e.g. saris and hijabs) with a swim suit or undergarments worn underneath.

For safety reasons, patrons wearing traditional garments (such as saris) are asked to remain in the shallow end of the pool. We ask that they not use the dive tank.

To ensure an environment that is safe and free from external contaminants, all participants are required to:

  • Wear clothing that is different from the clothing worn to the facility.
  • Take a complete and cleansing shower before entering the pool. Showering should occur while wearing the swim attire that will be worn in the water.

Personal inflatable toys

Inflatable toys are allowed in the facility if capacity permits. Baby water wings and tube rings on small children are permitted. However, they must be within arm’s reach of a responsible person. The responsible person must be a minimum 14 years of age.

The use of inflatables requires prior approval from the lifeguard. The lifeguard will consider how much activity is in the pool. Users may be tested on competence and expertise with inflatables. Lifeguards can refuse the use of equipment at any time.

Sanitation

We monitor pool water 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We use an automated system, as well as qualified staff a minimum of 4 times per day. A water sample is provided to Calgary Health Region once a week for testing. All facilities are cleaned and disinfected daily.

Snorkelling

Snorkeling equipment requires prior approval from the lifeguard. The lifeguard will consider how much activity is in the pool. Customers may need to demonstrate an ability to clear mask and snorkel. This must be accomplished without removing the equipment. The lifeguard can refuse the use of equipment at any time.
