Free mulch at East Calgary landfill
Some larger yard waste branches are chipped into mulch (wood chips) and made available for Calgarians to use.
Free mulch is currently available at the East Calgary Landfill. Mulch is available for residential customers only.
When is mulch available at East Calgary?
Free mulch is available all year-round. No appointment is required. You can pick up mulch anytime the East Calgary landfill is open – see hours here.
What equipment do I need?
You are responsible for loading mulch into your own vehicle. Bring your own shovel, tarps, containers and other supplies.
How much mulch can I take?
There are currently no limits for mulch. Take as much as you need.
Can I drop off other materials at the landfill when I pick up mulch?
If you bring garbage materials with you, landfill fees will apply.
How do I use the mulch?
The mulch can be used around evergreens, for yard and garden use, and is helpful for water retention and weed control.
Please note: The mulch is not screened and may contain other organic material (e.g. pine needles etc). The mulch is acidic and may affect tender annuals such as plants and flowers. Consult your local greenhouse for more information.
