Volunteer Tour Guide Program

Do you have an interest in city government, history, or local developments and have a passion for community education and engagement?

Do you enjoy giving back to your community by volunteering?

Do you enjoy talking to people, from school kids to seniors, and have a few hours a week to share your knowledge?

If so, we would love to hear from you!

What is the Volunteer Tour Guide Program?

The City offers tours of the Municipal Complex to students from Grades 5 to 12, post-secondary classes, and community, seniors, youth and service groups. During the 90-minute tour, participants can learn a variety of interesting facts about the City's buildings and fascinating insights about Calgary's city government. The Municipal Complex includes Historic City Hall, Municipal Building and Plaza, Council Chamber and the Administration Building all located in the heart of downtown Calgary.

What is the time commitment?

The volunteer tour guides are asked to commit to approximately two and a half hours per week. There is flexibility. Time commitment can vary depending on availability.

Tours are offered:

  • September to May
  • Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
  • Starting at 9:30 a.m. or 12:30 p.m.

What is involved when becoming a tour guide?

All our tours are conducted by knowledgeable, specially-trained volunteers. New recruits will be provided with a script and can shadow current tour guides until they feel comfortable leading a tour on their own.

Please view the volunteer position description for more information. You must be 18 years of age or older to apply.  A Police Information Check and Vulnerable Sector Search will be required for all potential volunteers.

Why volunteer?

As a tour guide, you will meet new people, learn about Calgary's history and government, and gain new skills. We offer training for the volunteer tour guide position, free parking at the City Hall Parkade during tours, and vouchers for our corporate gift room.
