Shouldice pedestrian bridge rehabilitation

Project Update - December 2022

Crews have substantially completed work on the Shouldice (Hextall) Pedestrian Bridge and the bridge has been re-opened to the public. For this rehabilitation, we removed the old wood bridge deck and replaced it with a concrete deck that includes aesthetic and historical features. We also repaired the bridge structure to extend its service-life and improved lighting.

Remaining work will be completed in Spring 2023 as soon as weather permits and should not affect the use of the bridge.

We thank you for your patience throughout this construction period.

The Shouldice (Hextall) Bridge, constructed in 1910, is a three-span, Pratt through-truss, steel bridge. It spans the Bow River and connects the neighbourhoods of Bowness and Montgomery. Originally a road and street railway bridge, it is now part of the Bow River Pathway, a bicycle and pedestrian system.

Traffic and pedestrian impacts

Impacts to the public will be minimal as pedestrian and cycling access will be maintained throughout construction.

Scope of work

The rehabilitation work will include:

  • Removal of the existing wood bridge deck and replacing it with a concrete one that includes aesthetic and historical features.
  • Repairs to the bridge structure.
  • Lighting improvements.
  • Recoating the truss members.

The cost of the rehabilitation is estimated at $2.5 million.
