Calgary's Environmental, Health and Safety Scorecard

The City of Calgary works hard to be a leader in environmental, health and safety stewardship. Serving 1.2 million Calgarians every day, we balance our environmental and safety responsibilities, while still providing the services citizens need. Below are some of the most sustainable examples:

  • Improving workplace safety

by implementing a corporate-wide safety dashboard to view safety performance in real-time.

  • Sustainable buildings:

Installed large-scale solar PV system on Bearspaw Water Treatment Plant.

  • Creating vibrant spaces:

Repurposed the land under the 4th Street Flyover to create a thriving green space.

  • Controlling weeds naturally

by continuing to introduce goats in public spaces.

  • Saving energy

by replacing over 78,000 Calgary streetlights with LED fixtures to reduce light pollution.

  • Replanted 24,000 trees

to replace the storm-damaged urban forest.

  • Making smart buys:

Purchased City buses that are better for the environment.

  • All staffed City facilities

have access to recycling and food and yard waste diversion.

  • Diverting waste from landfills

by building Canada’s largest composting facility.
