Earth Hour is a worldwide event to continue the conversation about how limiting our energy use can reduce our impact on the environment.

The city celebrates Earth Hour on March 25!

On Saturday, March 25, 2023, The City of Calgary joins other governments, organizations and citizens around the world in shutting off the lights for Earth Hour from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

All non-essential and decorative lighting will be turned off in the following locations:

  • Ad Valorem Place
  • All fire stations
  • Calgary Public Building
  • Dartmouth Place
  • Manchester Centre Building E
  • The Calgary Municipal Building (Historic City Hall, Administration Building, Municipal Building)
  • Water Centre

In addition, The City of Calgary has partnered with Alberta Council for Environmental Education (ACEE) to deliver the EcoSchools Canada program in Calgary including supporting EcoSchools to complete their action of participating in Earth Hour.

Join us for Calgary Unplugged: An Earth Hour Celebration

Calgary Unplugged is a family-friendly Earth Hour event held annually in East Village.

Location: Central Library (800 3 Street SE)
Date: Saturday, March 25, 2023
Time: 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Join us for musical performances, crafts, and educational displays. Participants can engage with magnetic induction systems, experience producing 300 watts of power on pedal powered bike generators, play with a midway style game to learn about Alberta’s renewable energy sources, and more! All non-essential lighting in the library will be turned off from 8:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. and participants are encouraged to bring LED or other lighting with them to use during this time.

Calgary Unplugged is hosted by The Arusha Centre's Climate Program, with program support from The City.

If you can't make it to the event, here are some other options to Take part in Earth Hour at home:

  • Join fellow Calgarians in turning off your lights and unplugging electronics, appliances and chargers for one hour, starting at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 25, 2023. Share your participation either before or after, using #EarthHour and #EarthHourYYC.
  • Take action with a community group Arusha Climate has prepared a Community Association Climate Action Toolkit, to continue the celebration after Earth Hour. Use it to get inspired to take various climate actions with your community.
