Changes to remote participation for members of Council

Passed by 15-0 on February 27, 2024

Councillor Sharp voted in favour

Councillor Sharp supported limiting remote attendance at meetings for members of Council because she believes it's important for Caglarians to see their elected representatives physically present and attentive at Council meetings.

Above all, it's important that councillors be as effective as possible in performing their duties, so Councillor Sharp continues to support remote participation under some circumstances, including unexpected family and personal situations. She also brought forward an amendment, supported unanimously by Council, to allow councillors to participate remotely at committee meetings where those councillors are not regular members. This allows councillors to be as effective as possible at meetings that they might not normally attend in balance with other responsibilities, like attending to constituent concerns.

Motion to begin the repeal process of the Single-Use Items bylaw

Passed by Council 8-7 on January 30, 2023 (original amendment)
Passed by Council 10-5 on January 30, 2023 (entire motion as amended)

Councillor Sharp voted in favour of beginning the process to repeal the bylaw

Councillor Sharp co-sponsored a Notice of Motion, moved by Councillor Wyness, to begin the process to repeal the Single-use Items bylaw, including minimum charges for bags and the requirement that food-service items only be provided on request.

Because the Single-Use Items Bylaw is a City Charter Bylaw, advertisement and a public hearing are still required by law before Council can officially vote to repeal the bylaw. Until that time, the bylaw remains in effect. A public hearing is expected to be held in May.
